Amb. Dr. Omar Rifai

 

Dr. Omar RifaiDr. Omar Rifai is a graduate of Harvard (1974), Oxford (1975) and Georgetown University (1991). His field of concentration is political science and international relations. He joined the Jordanian Diplomatic Service in 1975 and served in Jordan’s missions in Cairo, Bern, New York, London and Washington from 1976 to 1994. In 1994-1996, he held the positions of Coordinator for the Middle East peace process, Director of the Special Bureau at the Foreign Ministry in Amman, and member of the Jordanian delegation to the Jordan-Israel peace talks. In 1996, he was sworn in as Ambassador of Jordan to Israel (1996-2000), then Italy (where he also acted as Permanent Representative to the UN agencies in Rome, non-resident Ambassador to Croatia, Bosnia-Herzegovina and San Marino, 2000-2003), and finally to Egypt and the Arab League in Cairo (2005-2008). In 2003-2005, and again in 2008, he was Secretary-General of Jordan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, after which he assumed responsibilities as President of the Jordan Institute of Diplomacy in Amman (2009-2011). During academic years 2004-2005 and 2009-2011, Dr. Rifai was also a part-time lecturer in political science at the University of Jordan.
